The Immortals series is one close to my heart and has been for years even before it was ever officially written down. I’ve mentioned it before, but the main cast of characters Emaranthe, Ivo, Jaeger, and Jadeth are based on characters created by myself, my husband, and my two friends Jessica and Neal. Why? Because over the years we’ve been a force to reckon with in the MMORPG world and we’ve been through hell and back again, always together, in one form or another.
The characters, specifically the names, have been our gaming identities for years. No matter what game or where, it was the four of us. During this time, I was just becoming brave enough to defy my family and grow confident in my abilities as a writer. With their permission, of course, I penned short side stories about our characters over the space of a couple of years for pure fun. No direct connection to any game, no fan fic, the only thing not pulled from my imagination are the names and personalities of the characters. The personalities are dead on and if you were to meet my husband or friends you’d think “holy shit!”. They love it because it makes them pseudo famous and gives their fictional persona a sense of reality and permanence. After a while, I began to realize that the short flash fiction pieces were good. Very good. They needed to be freed to the world. With a lot of refining, and a lot of coaxing, the scattered stories turned into a massive mythos and an amazing, unified story.
Permanence is the hard part. I’ve had to withdraw from 99% of my gaming with them for the last year and a half to focus on my writing. It was an either or proposition. I chose writing, but am still very close to my friends (lol and even closer to my husband!) than ever because they know I write the books out of love for them. Unfortunately my friends live fairly far away, well over 700 miles, so seeing them in person is nearly impossible. Once a year maybe. So we speak online, we chat, text. All too often days go by without hearing their voices. I’ve got a family, full time day job, writing, and my sanity to maintain. There just aren’t enough hours in the day. But we are loyal and their characters are now Immortalized for the public too.
Part 3 is coming along slowly, but steadily. And yes, there will be a Part 4. Part 3 is huge, not just word count wise, as it’s just at 27k right now and not even ¼ of the way done, but the scope of the plot is huge. So much rides on this book being the keystone to the series! Want to know the general plot flow for all four? Part 1 is the introduction (short and sweet, it introduces the characters and the world, approx 20k words), Part 2 is the main plot set up (generally deeper, more well rounded, with important other characters coming into play and the main conflict becoming apparent, approx 40k words). Part 3, still a work in progress, answers the questions asked in Part 2 and gives the reader the chess pieces on the giant board. This book will most likely hit 90k words or more. Part 4, not even started yet, will conclude the series with the characters resolving the conflict in an epic fashion. I also expect this one to reach 50k minimum.
Part 3 is complicated and deep. I am writing it slower than Part 2 because I need to reach the right goals at the right times or the entire plot can go sideways. A lot needs to happen and carefully. That being said, I hope to have Part 3 out this fall sometime, but no guarantees. I am currently giggling and dancing with glee because my cover artist is hard at work for the cover for Part 3. I can’t wait to see what he comes up with! I’ve seen the super rough sketches and I almost burst into tears with joy! I also hope to reveal both the cover and the full title in either late summer or early fall, so until then enjoy Parts 1 and 2!
